The thing is, too many salon owners don’t allow themselves any kind of salon pay except for what they make behind the chair. In this video, I show you how you can change that. As a salon owner, you should always be paying yourself for both the time spent behind the chair, and the time spent not behind the chair. In the beginning, it makes sense to forego any kind of salon salary because you’re building your business. The problem is, you may end up going years without paying yourself. You get comfortable with the way things are and you don’t end up establishing that salary. I also hear people say that their payment for owning a salon is based on their end-of-year profits. There’s a big problem with this mentality because you may never get your salon to the point where it leaves you with any salon pay. A good strategy to help you ensure a salary for yourself is to divide your business out into a pie. The idea is that you set aside for yourself a certain percentage of the overall revenue of the salon. However, you can’t just choose an arbitrary percentage. You have to go through and calculate all of the costs and revenue streams in order to figure out what an appropriate number would be. For example, if your salon is making a million dollars a year, you should be able to take home 100,000 dollars. Just remember, your salon pay is directly linked to how well you can track, measure, and manage your salon. Owning a salon can be challenging.
