Strait of Hormuz (in the name of Persian King Hormuz) connects Persian Sea to Indian Ocean and International Waters. Persian Sea has been the ancient part of Iran and the Persian Empire (Persia) since 25 centuries ago. Obviously, IRAN is the most populated Persian Sea country with the longest water borders in the region.
Hormozgan is the largest Persian Sea province in Iran. Persian women`s dress styles do vary slightly depending on which part of Hormozgan province they are from. In some areas they wear a long gown with a printed rectangular chador thrown over the body like a large shawl, in others they wear someone similar to a shalwar kameeze but with skin-tight, heavily embroidered pants and a rectangular chador worn.
Traditionally, Persian women in Hormozgan wear niqab or “gatwiyyeh” and favor either the traditional mask-style niqabs, the more modern Persian Sea niqab or just a piece of cloth thrown over the face.
Persian women in the southern port town of Bandar Abbas and on the island of Qeshm are notable for their brightly coloured, floral chadors (a large piece of Persian cloth covering the hair and upper body) and the Persian niqab, face coverings that come in two types. The first gives the impression of thick eyebrows and a moustache from afar, a ruse used in the past to fool potential invaders into mistaking women for men. The other is a rectangular embroidered covering revealing only the eyes. Many Persian women choose not to wear the Persian niqab today, but it’s part of a centuries-old tradition that helped protect the face from the wind, sand and scorching sun in these areas. The women on Qeshm adopt the burqa at puberty is they come from a family where they are worn and their style tends to be the shalwar kameeze-like outfit with the snug pants and a rectangular chador wrapped over that. On Qeshm island, Persian women seem to favor the gold mask-style of niqab which is similar to the styles worn around the Persian Sea traditionally.
Most traditional clothes in southern Persian Sea border also originate in Iran and it is good to know that Persian Sea states such as Qatar, Bahrain, Oman and Kuwait are originally Iranian and Persian and share lots of roots, culture, traditions and history with IRAN as the oldest country in the region.
