What kinds of bedding should I use? And where do I get all this stuff?” All your cage related questions for owning chinchillas are answered in this cute, concise video being the second of our care series by the one and only Chinpals. Some general points: 1. A chinchilla’s cage should be quite large with plenty of things to jump to and from, interact with, hide in, and sleep in! 2. Our favorite cages are the Midwest Double Unit Ferret Nation and Critter Nation cages, which can be found on Amazon for about $300-350. 3. Plastic should never be inside a chinchilla cage since they can (and will) chew and swallow it! Instead, opt for untreated KD pine and poplar, metal, fleece, or tile furnishings for ledges, toys, and shelving. 4. Large, metal wheels like Silver Surfers or Chin Spins are great for giving your chinchilla access to exercise all the time! Remember, they must be at least 14" diameter, not plastic, no wire or mesh, and no bar in the center! 5. Unfortunately pet stores carry many things that are NOT safe for chins which is why we recommend so many online shops like Whimsy’s Menagerie, NOLA Chin Rescue, and Etsy shops like Pandamonium Pets or Woodnstuffga. 6. Fleece can be found at fabric stores like JoAnn (or premade chinny shops like ChinChic) if you want to sew your own liners or hammocks! Remember to change and wash fleece liners frequently since fleece breeds bacteria quickly. 7. Shavings (KD pine or aspen) are my choice of bedding since it can be spot cleaned, but keep in mind it’s expensive and messy. 8. Tiles are very easy to wipe clean and encourage litter box use. They are great for keeping cool (though not replacing AC) and can make a good cage flooring. 9. Cage cleaners we like are 50:50 white distilled vinegar and water, or Nature’s Miracle Small Pet Cage Cleaner. 10. Shop vacs messes like dust, hay, and shavings way better than a regular vacuum!
