| Video Discription | The rocks of Piha beach near Auckland are the eroded remnants of the ancient Waitākere Volcano. This huge volcano extended over a vast area and consisted of a variety of rocks that were erupted over several million years. Whakaare / Lion Rock and the other cliffs of Piha Beach allow us to piece together some of the history of the volcano, and the cliffs also have an interesting variety of coastal erosion features. In this video, geologist Bruce Hayward gives us a guided tour... SAFETY: Please be aware of the tides when exploring around the rocks and caves to the south of beach. They can be cut off so are best visited on a falling tide - a spring low tide if possible.
