Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a special address at a community event in Sydney, celebrating the vibrant Indian diaspora in Australia. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of Australia also attended the event, which drew a crowd of around 20,000 people at the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney.
Albanese, praising the immense welcome received by PM Modi, humorously compared him to Bruce Springsteen, stating that PM Modi was "the Boss" and received an even greater reception. The event was organized by the Indian Australian Diaspora Foundation (IADF), and the two Prime Ministers were scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting the following day.
During his address, PM Modi touched upon several key points, including the growth of the India-Australia relationship based on mutual trust and respect. He mentioned the various ways in which the ties between the two countries have been defined over the years, from the 3Cs (Commonwealth, Cricket, and Curry) to the 3D (Democracy, Diaspora, and Dosti) and the 3E (Energy, Economy, and Education). However, he emphasized that the strongest link between the nations is the mutual respect and trust fostered by the Indian community residing in Australia.
PM Modi expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Albanese for helping unveil the foundation stone of "Little India," a suburb in Sydney, which serves as recognition of the Indian community's contribution to Australia's development. He also playfully suggested that the Australian PM should visit Chatkazz 'Chaat' and 'Jalebi' at Harris Park, known for its delicious food.
The Prime Minister highlighted the deep connection between India and Australia through cricket, as well as the growing influence of other cultural aspects like yoga, tennis, and films. He engaged the audience by asking questions such as the fastest-growing economy, the second-largest mobile manufacturer, the country with the largest Covid vaccination program, and the largest smartphone data consumer, with the crowd responding enthusiastically with "India!" after each question.
PM Modi spoke about India's progress as a developing nation, its strong banking system, and its achievements in various fields such as youth talent, exports, foreign exchange reserves, fintech revolution, and the ability to remit money swiftly during the pandemic. He also mentioned plans to open a new Indian consulate in Brisbane.
The event received support from PM Modi's followers, who organized special buses from Brisbane and Canberra to facilitate attendance. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the 2016 census recorded 619,164 people in Australia identifying themselves as having ethnic Indian ancestry.
In an interview with "The Australian" newspaper, PM Modi expressed his desire to elevate the relationship with Australia to the "next level," focusing on closer defense and security ties for an open and free Indo-Pacific. Sameer Pandey, the first Indian-origin Lord Mayor of Australia's Parramatta City Council, expressed optimism for stronger ties between the two countries and his commitment to creating a sustainable, inclusive, and diverse city.
