JAPAN vs NETHERLANDS | Highlights | Men's VNL 2024. The third week of the qualifying round of the Volleyball Nations League 2024 (VNL) Philippine tournament is underway in Manila.
On Friday, June 21, the Japanese men's national team, ranked 4th in the FIVB world rankings (before the start of the match), faced off against the Netherlands, ranked 13th, and won in straight sets 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-20), bringing their overall record in the qualifying round to 7 wins and 3 losses.
In the first set, Japan showed off their strengths of defense and passing from the beginning, creating a good flow. Japan's tenacious defense caused the Netherlands to make some mistakes, widening the gap. In the end, relief server Kai Yuto's service ace made it 25-18. Japan took the first set.
In the second set, in addition to the points from service aces from the beginning, the serve reception was stable and the side outs were steadily increasing points. With consecutive blocks by Takahashi Kentaro, who was in the starting lineup that day, and Nishida Yuji, the score was 11-8, and the Netherlands took a timeout. After that, Ishikawa Yuki spiked the ball, and the Netherlands took their second timeout at 13-8. With a high spike success rate of 62%, the Netherlands took the second set.
The Netherlands was leading in the early stages of the third set. However, they managed to turn the game around when Nishida was serving. Furthermore, substitute Miyaura Kento's serve was also good, and they were down by five points at 21-16. In this set, they had four service aces and many break points from effective serves, winning 25-20. They defeated the Netherlands in a straight set with a score of 3-0.
Even when Japan's serve reception was poor, they were able to cover for it with spikes, leading to a high success rate. Japan won the match by surpassing their opponents in every statistic, taking many break points from the serves of Nishida and Sekita.
Yuki Ishikawa
"This was a very important match for us, coming after our loss to Canada. We started off very well in the first and second sets. We were trailing midway through the third set, but we were unable to come back from that, something we weren't able to do in the match against Canada. Everyone was conscious of what they were doing and I think that's why we were able to achieve that result (turning the game around and taking the set). Personally, I made a few serve errors so I would like to fix that. (For the remaining two matches) First of all we need to play our own volleyball. I think our strength is being able to keep getting side outs, so I want to keep that in mind as we go."
Nishida Yuji
"It doesn't matter who the opponent is, but after a loss you have to fight with a difficult mindset. But we can use the fact that we won 3-0 as motivation. Tomorrow will be another tough match. I want to prepare well and go into tomorrow. My spikes weren't very good. I was too tense towards the opponent. I think I could have done a little better in that area. I'm glad I was able to contribute to the team in my own way in terms of defense and blocking."
