Pradosham is a mix of two words, ‘pra’ and ‘dosham’. ‘Pra’ means ‘remove’, and ‘dosham’ means ‘sin’. Hence, it means 'the time that removes sins'. Pradosham comes every day, but the Pradosham time on triodasi day is very auspiciousm, especially on the Krishnapaksha triodasi (the dark fortnight or triodasi before New moon or Amavasya). Pradosham on Saturday is Shani Pradosham, which is even more auspicious. In India, many Hindus observe fast (Pradosh vrat) during twilight. As per Hindu mythology, it was on the auspicious day of Pradosham that Lord Shiva, along with his consort, Goddess Parvati, feels very joyous, pleased, and generous. So the devotees of Shiva observe this fast and worship him to seek divine blessings. Pradosham comes twice a month, on the 13th day of each fortnight in the Hindu lunar calendar. The Skanda Purana mentions the benefits of the Pradosh vrat. Those who observe the fast with faith and devotion can experience contentment, good health, and wealth. Pradosh vrat also brings spiritual progress and wish-fulfilment. It is also good for removing sins. Pradosha Mantra is chanted during Pradosha Pooja and Pradosh vrat. The Mantra invokes the blessings of Shiva, and its benefits are akin to those of the Pradosh vrat. It also enables one to eliminate sins and bad karma.
