Various of parade STORYLINE: Central Bangkok was turned into a sea of colour Saturday, as tens of thousands of people joined the annual Pride parade. It comes as a bill to legalise marriage equality prepares to pass its final legislative hurdle before becoming law, making Thailand the first country in Southeast Asia to do so. A 200-metre-long rainbow flag was carried down one of the capital city’s busiest shopping streets, waving in a month of Pride Month celebrations that have received endorsement from politicians, government agencies and some of the biggest business conglomerates. “This parade is a milestone for LGBTQ in Thailand and I have my boyfriend and we plan to marry maybe next year, when the law is passed,” said 27-year-old Kunchanok Khantiphong, as his partner took photos, beside him. “So we go to these campaigns because we want to give our endorsement to Thailand, that we very (much) support the LGBTQ,” he added. The event was launched by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who has given his full backing to the legal move to pass a marriage equality bill. It’s expected to get Senate approval later this month and will become law once it receives royal assent. Among the many eagerly waiting the change in the law are Ploynaplus Chirasukon and partner Kwanporn Kongpetch. They attended the parade, dressed as a bride and groom. The city’s first big celebration of the LGBTQ+ community was in 1999, when it was called The Bangkok Gay Festival. It faded out after that but was revived in recent years, partly as a result of huge youth-led protests calling for deep-rooted societal changes, in 2020.
