So, it’s time for another edition of our series The New Standards. This show takes an in-depth look into songs that transcend genre, decade, and fads. They’re songs that have achieved true lasting power in our culture and society. On previous episodes we have covered Hey Jude by The Beatles, Dreams by Fleetwood Mac, and Hotel California by The Eagles. But today we are breaking down an all-out classic from 1973. It’s an absolute age-defying masterpiece... It’s Dark Side of the Moon’s ‘Time’ by Pink Floyd. When Roger Waters was growing up his mother emphatically taught him that his adolescence was preparing him for something important later in life. In fact, according to Roger, his mother obsessed with education and training him how to be success as an adult... which meant earning a living, having a family and fitting into modern society. She assured him that sometime down the road all this training would make for a happy life in the real world. However, at age 29 Roger had a striking epiphany. He realized that he had been wasting his life preparing instead of living. “I spent an awful lot of my life … waiting for my life to start,” said Waters. “I thought that at some point I would turn from a chrysalis into a butterfly, that my real life would begin. So, if I had that bit of my life to live again, I would rather live the years between 18 and 28 knowing that that was it, that nothing was suddenly going to happen—that it was happening all the time. ‘Time’ passes, and you are what you are, you do what you do.” This realization inspired Waters to grab the reins and begin guiding your own destiny. Subsequently, he started pondering and philosophizing about what really mattered in life. He asked himself what really makes you happy. His conclusion was simple. When you genuinely help other human beings, you feel joy. And collectively, those acts of service bring lasting joy into your life, far more than serving yourself. |
