As a root crop, light and fluffy soil is best! That makes it easier for your plants to mature nicely. They're also not super heavy feeders, so you won't need to worry about fertilizing if you have good soil. When you plant them, you can loosen up the soil a little extra as well as clear away things like mulch and small rocks. You're going to plant them only about a quarter of an inch deep, or you can set the seeds on the surface and then cover them up with a finely sifted topping. Make sure your soil is moist and STAYS moist, especially during germination. That's key for a succession start to your plants. We don't mind sowing a little heavily because not every seed won't survive for the full four weeks or so. One thing we like to do is cover the seeds with a board. That keeps the water in, but that does mean we need to check on these seeds daily to make sure we remove the board once a seed breaks the surface. After a few days or a week, you're going to have lots of plants coming in! We prefer to thin them to about four inches after they've grown a little bit. We do that for a couple of reasons: -Splitting can occur due to inconsistent watering. It's not the prettiest, but it can still be edible. -Pests are a common thing, but they don't often decimate our plants. We don't usually use any kind of pest control, but you can use something like Sluggo Plus. Make sure to harvest your radishes! Depending on the variety, you're going to have plants ready to harvest in about four or five weeks. If you let them go much longer, the root is going to get tough, and the top will go to flower. If you happen to miss some, we encourage you to let them do their thing and attract pollinators!
