Located on the serene banks of the Ponnai River in Melpadi, between Tiruvalam and Cholinga Nallur in the Vellore District of Tamil Nadu, this temple is a testament to the architectural brilliance and cultural heritage of the Chola dynasty. 🌊🏞️ Architectural Splendor and Sacred Sculptures 🛕🗿 This Pallipadai temple is a stunning example of intricate sculpture and divine artistry. Inside, you'll find mesmerizing sculptures depicting Lord Shiva offering his eyes as a sacrifice and the fascinating figure of Bichadanar. On the temple's southern side, an inscription reads, "Wodeyar Sri Raja Rajan Edupitha Kattali," indicating its foundation by Rajaraja Chola in honor of Atur Tunjiya Devar. 📜✨ A Monument of Historical Significance 🏺⚔️ Arinjaya Chola, the father of the illustrious Rajaraja Chola, met his end in a battle near the Neeva River close to Melpadi. Rajaraja Chola, upon ascending the throne, constructed the Pallipat Temple at the site of his father's demise, honoring his memory. Nearby, the Somanatheeswarar Temple, built during the reign of Parantaka Chola I, stands as another historical marvel. Rajaraja Chola also built the ornate Thiruchuttu Mali Kai hall for this temple, generously donating 15 ghachins of gold and 1000 pits of land, equivalent to 80 grams of gold and one lakh square feet of land. 🏅🌟 Generosity of the Chola Dynasty 💎💰 Rajaraja Chola's magnanimity didn't stop there. Out of reverence for his ancestors, he and subsequent Chola rulers, along with their families, continued to donate gold ornaments and idols to these temples. This legacy of devotion and generosity has been preserved through centuries, making these temples rich in both history and spirituality. 🙏✨ Preservation and Restoration Efforts 🛠️🏛️ Despite the temple facing damage during the invasion of Malikapur, it was restored by the diligent efforts of the archeological department officials.
