To try and combat this, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt decided to take the country off of the "gold standard" in order to recall all gold coins and similar items for melting so that they could try and get through this ordeal. 8. 50 Centavos Colony Coin, Colombia Humanity often fears what it doesn't understand, and in the 1900's, when diseases were arising more frequently without modern medicine to combat it, people took drastic steps to keep themselves "safe". Shekels of Tyre While the Shekel of Tyre may not be the most valuable coin out there, it is a coin that holds a unique place in history that numerous other coins do not. For while it is not proven, it is widely believed that 30 Shekels of Tyre were used to pay off Judas Iscariot to betray Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Thus setting up the events of his crucifixion at the hands of the Romans. 5. The Brasher Doubloon, US The early days of the United States had certain issues with money that is well documented. But before the Constitution of 1789 (which is what they still use to govern the land to this day), individual states had the ability to make their own state coinage and not have to follow the guidelines of the government. This allowed for a lot of creativity, such as with The Brasher Doubloon. 4. 2007 C$1m Coin, Canada The 2007 C$1m coin is definitely a coin that stands out, and it does make you question what the thought process was behind making it like it is now. First and foremost, this is a 100kg coin, which means it's basically bigger than just about any coin out there on the market right now. 3. Which is true. But during the 1970's in the United States of America, copper prices were on the rise. So the US Mint tried to make alternative kinds of pennies in order to help make things more manageable. 1. Wartime Victory Coins, Philippines Back during World War II, Japan reached far and wide in order to expand their reach into the Pacific and beyond, including taking over the Philippines. And when they did that, they took all their metal currency and sent it back to Japan to be melted down for use for war materials. |
