Windows server maintenance can help prevent loss of performance.
With our server maintenance checklist, you should be better equipped with an idea on how to do your regular server maintenance. Use our server maintenance checklist to keep your servers running smoothly and to avoid any downtime. A very wise Dell technician once told me "If you don't schedule routine downtime for maintenance for your hardware, then your hardware will schedule the down time for you. AND it probably won't be convenient either."
Simple maintenance and monitoring often prevents server crashes from turning into a server catastrophe. If you are not performing regular maintenance on your servers, you might run into a problem that is usually solved by an update that you did not apply. Maintenance to servers will ensure the servers are running as expected, and help to prevent total or partial network outages.
Regular maintenance will make sure minor server issues do not turn into catastrophic system crashes. Server maintenance is the process of keeping your servers software up to date and running, so your computer network runs smoothly and you do not experience any downtime or data loss. It includes tasks such as reviewing the servers performance, making sure automated system monitoring utilities are installed and configured correctly, identifying potential security risks, and backing up data on regular intervals. Ever since Windows Server 2008 comes with the Reliability Monitor which allows to see overall system stability and see details of events affecting the servers reliability, provides stability indexes over time, giving an insight into the level of reliability your servers are operating.
A server running Windows Server 2012 R2 or newer may experience a broad set of configuration issues, settings that are impeding performance, or even just plain old memory leak issues (especially with infinite loops in PowerShell). Servers can have problems if system files or other rarely-accessed or files are damaged, making some processes fail or times out. Business continuity depends on servers running at all time, and every mistake leads to expensive downtime. This works fine for just a couple of servers, but when you have dozens of systems to manage, it is easy to lose track.
If you have many servers, you may want to set up updates for Windows OS via Group Policy rather than local to each server, essentially, it will depend on your environment as to how well that works for you. Windows group policy settings can be changed to turn off driver updates automatically, using the Turn off Windows Update driver searching policy. You can configure fallback reboots using either Group Policy or the System Management tools, to occur when a machine needs to restart following an update.
If you are using WSUS standalone servers or older versions of Configuration Manager, you can opt out of superseding updates manually using the WSUS Console.
Before updating any drivers, verify the servers are capable of being taken out of service temporarily, or you are within a designated maintenance window. Before making any changes to the server database and systems, be sure you should make backups prior to making any updates, and your backups are working.
Keeping your servers updated is one of the most important maintenance tasks to perform. Server maintenance needs to be done on a regular basis in order to make sure your servers keep running without any issues, and although many of the maintenance tasks are automated now in the Windows operating system, there are still things that must be checked and monitored on a regular basis in order to make sure that Windows is running optimally. Tuning and managing system issues is a fundamental part of running a server infrastructure on-premises.
