| Video Discription | ‘The Flight’ is a fusion-electronic song that combines Indian Classical Music with contemporary electronic music. The song puts you in a trance and sets the listener on a beautiful journey into the infinite. The original Marathi poem ‘Akaashwedi’ (fond of the skies) is penned by renowned poet Padma Gole. Padma ji, in this poem explores the feeling of freedom, adventure and empowerment. She uses the metaphor of a care-free bird roaming the limitless skies. Bolts of lightning flow through her heart and wings ; and this power is what drives her through her amazing journey. The blast of joy, hope and power that one feels is described beautifully, yet subtly in this poem. The music elevates this emotion of ‘freedom’ further by welcoming the listener to accompany the bird on its flight into the boundless world. Late Padma Gole being a respected feminist poet of her time, has penned many masterpieces that bring out the feminist issues and emotions of that era. Many of her subjects are relevant even in today’s age. ‘Akaashwedi’ (fond of the skies) is just another gem from her repertoire that encourages women to break all chains, soar high and take flight. Having spent more than a decade of my life studying Indian Classical Music from various eminent gurus, my first thought while composing ‘The Flight’ was which Raag would be apt for this poem. Then, I realised just like the words and the spirit of the bird, the composition should be limitless and not confined to a Raag and its set of rules. Realising the simplicity and flow of the words, I have tried to keep the composition simple and fluid. The addition of electronic sounds transports the listener into an imaginative universe. The simplicity of the words, the fluid tune of the composition and the trance music elements of the arrangement help bring out the inherent flavour of the poem. Since the poem depicts a journey which is free-flowing and endless, the only instrument that could bring out these elements was the ‘bansuri’. Gandhaar Amin’s free-flowing ‘bansuri’ pieces in the song help the listener visualise this fluid motion of the bird’s flight. The imaginative world thus created by the poetry and the composition needed to have an imaginative and creative visual support. This is aptly brought out through the stop-motion animation video created by the talented Ishita Thawait. |
