Instead, they should use the (hopefully) reliable sources listed in the Wikipedia footnotes. - To find academic articles or peer-reviewed articles, start with Google Scholar: https://scholar.google.com/ - If you haven’t used Google Scholar before, here’s a great tutorial for how to use keywords to find what you’re looking for: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8_CW6FV8Ac - Jen wants you to know if you’re skimming an article for reliability, see if the article quotes at least two experts (primary sources). There should also be several hyperlinks to outside information. If you’re unsure about the source, click on the hyperlinks to see if they lead to official studies or peer-reviewed research. - All Sides is a great resource for understanding media bias and misinformation. Here’s a link to their media bias chart: https://www.allsides.com/media-bias/media-bias-chart - As mentioned, Jen subscribes to the New York Times’ daily newsletter: https://www.nytimes.com/newsletters. However, there are many different newsletters to choose from, depending on where you’re located in the world. Jen recommends getting one global newsletter and one local. Additional Resources: - Snopes.com is a great site for fact-checking: https://www.snopes.com/ - Politifact provides independent fact-checking for claims made by politicians. They are owned by the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, which is a great resource for journalism teachers: https://www.poynter.org/. - If you’re in Australia, I like https://www.abc.net.au/news/factcheck/ for fact-checking. - Jen used to use https://newslit.org/ in her classroom to look at misinformation in the news.
