| Video Discription | In a major setback for Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, the Patna High Court has struck down the state government's decision to increase reservation for SC, ST, OBC, and Extremely Backward Classes (EBCs) to 65% in government jobs and educational institutions. The Bihar Assembly had passed this bill in November 2023, soon after releasing the results of India's first caste survey, which showed that these reserved categories constitute over 84% of the state's population. The opposition had made this a big election issue, demanding a nationwide caste census. However, the court ruled that these amendments violated the Supreme Court's 50% ceiling on total reservations set in the landmark Indra Sawhney case. This isn't the first time a state has tried to breach this limit. Tamil Nadu has 69% reservation, protected under the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution.
