Our philosophy at Out This Door is that we do NOT want this to be the trip of a lifetime! The "Trip of a Lifetime" implies that you will never go back or that this trip can't be topped - no way! You will want to go back to these places to explore more, you will want to take more epic adventures (regardless of what you mean by "epic"!). At Out This Door we want to inspire and encourage you to travel. See the wonders of the world, even if you can only get to your backyard. There's amazing and beautiful things and amazing people everywhere when we get out this door (in our minds) too! Happy and safe travels.

Imagine this scene…A gondola ride over sweeping vineyards takes you to a romantic forested park with a wide view of the Rhine and the magnificent statue of Germania, the symbol of a unified Germany. You’d think it would be overrun by tourists, but it’s not. Sounds too good to be true, but it is. Let’s get Out This Door…
I’m Nikki at Out This Door. While you are here, hit that subscribe button below! You’ll want to keep coming back for our travel insights in the US and beyond.
In this video I want to share a Rhine River cruise secret side trip that you don’t have to sign up for in advance!
The port of Rüdesheim is a tiny, touristy village with cute narrow streets of cobblestones, shops, vineyards, wonderful restaurants, catering to the river cruise ships and European tourists. While everyone is exploring the town, check out this adventure hiding in plain sight—the Niederwald Monument.
If you had a car, you could drive there. But you are on a river cruise. No problem! You can walk the 2 kilometers up the hill. Or you can ride a cable car!
When docking at Rüdesheim follow the signs to the village and begin to look for the icon of the cable car, just follow the signs through the village, yes, in the village, hidden among the tight alleys and the welcoming lights of the restaurants, is the ticket entrance. It’s right next to the Christmas shop!
Germania and the Niederwald Monument stand over 125 ft tall and commemorate the unification of the German empire in 1870 and is now a UNESCO World heritage site.
The cable car route is usually open between March and November. The round trip journey cost us 10 euro. Each cable car is just built for two, couples travel knee to knee over the vineyards. Below hikers, dog walkers, and harvesters move through the field. And above, the Lady of Niederwald awaits.
The journey takes about 10 minutes each way. You might be in time to enjoy the restaurant but you will certainly be in time to take in the view of the Rhine valley below. See if you can spot the river cruise boats!
The website goes on to say that if you are afraid of heights this might not be the transportation option for you! But we found it felt very safe. Neither my husband nor I are fond of heights nor tight spaces so we took a look at the cable cars before plunking down our money and decided to go for it. The enclosed space of the cable car is about car door height to the chest, perfect for resting your arm on the ledge so it’s high enough to provides a sense of safety. The upper part is open on the sides and the top of each car does have a roof. Though it was lightly raining, the roof was enough to keep us from getting wet. So in our experience the cable car was open enough to not feel claustrophobic and enclosed enough to help us feel safe while flying over the vineyards below (of course everyone is a bit different on that so I hope my hyperlapse video of the journey puts you at ease.
Make sure to catch your ride back down otherwise, you will be walking through the vineyards downhill to get back to the village. Once back in Rudesheim, enjoy dinner. We ate at the Terrace Restaurant and loved it, Here’s the Riesling we had while we were there.
Taking the journey to Niederwald by cable car seems almost too shy to stand out in the crowd. But it is worth it!
