| Video Discription | A man meets a woman at a wedding and manages to sweet talk her, only to end up inadvertently helping out another male. One of the middle-rank plays that formed the ballast of British television for decades, things which often remind you of something else but not necessarily of themselves. Ann Beech is especially appealing and deserves better than to be remembered as a sitcom next-door neighbour as her reading of a script, as here, is always lifted by a sparky interpretation (the Mother too of the late Charlotte Coleman). https://letterboxd.com/film/a-bit-of-a-lift/reviews/ (Spoilers ahead) A Bit of a Lift proves that free love did at least, by this stage, filter down into the suburban, middle-aged, middle classes. It's not car keys in the bowl, Blue Nun on ice and pampas grass in the garden however; it's the tale of two strangers - Ronald Fraser and Ann Beach - who meet during a wedding reception and decide to have some afternoon delight together. Unfortunately, the hotel cannot provide a double room with a bathroom and so Fraser must trek off in search of the latter, only to find himself bamboozled by alcohol and the anonymous hotel corridors to find his way back for his proposed frolic with the voluptuous Beach. Step forward Donald Churchill, in that perennial farcical role of the suicidal man for whom the events bring about a change of heart.
