| Video Discription | On 11 November 1918 the Armistice of Compiègne ended the First World War, then known as the "Great War" or the "War to end War". In the four years of war since 1914, 17 million people from 40 states had lost their lives, including 8 million civilians. All continental empires of Europe had fallen, namely Imperial Germany, Russia, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire (Turkey). While even after the war's end countless casualties of famine, pandemics and battlefield injuries were to be mourned, new forms of political extremism took root in many places, such as Italian Fascism or National Socialism in the German-speaking world, thus laying the foundation for an even deadlier conflict, two decades later.
