| Video Discription | The sacraments are important because we are not angels. Human beings, made in the image and likeness of God, are incarnate spirits. We have this cultural idea that religion involves a flight from the body in order to reach God. Christianity, in fact, presents the exact opposite movement: God takes on a body in order to reach us. The sacraments take up all the stuff of the material world, making the physical the very vehicle through which the spiritual and the Divine reaches us in our spiritual and physical humanity. Like the hemorrhaging woman in the Gospels, the sacraments are where we encounter, in our bodies, the power flowing out of Christ’s body to heal us, to transform us, and to divinize us. The sacraments manifest here on earth, our eternal destiny to participate in the divine life.
