| Video Discription | The Supreme Court of India ruled the electoral bonds scheme unconstitutional, in a landmark decision impacting India's political donations system. Launched in 2017, electoral bonds were hailed as revolutionary, despite criticisms over the anonymity they provided. After a four-year run, the top judicature directed the State Bank of India (SBI) to cease issuing these bonds immediately. More critically, the SBI has been directed to submit data of all past electoral bond donors to the Election Commission of India. The ruling BJP stated that the scheme's intention was to bring transparency, despite majority of bonds benefitting the ruling party. This verdict arrives just ahead of the all-important Lok Sabha elections.
