The process of pushing the exhaust gas in two stroke engine with the fresh charge coming from the transfer port is called scavenging. This video clearly explained the process. As shown in the fig: when the piston is at BDC (bottom dead centre) the pre-compressed fresh charge moves up through the transfer port and reached the cylinder which will be filled with exhaust gas from the previous power stroke. So the fresh charge pushes out the exhaust gas through the outlet, this process is called scavenging.Technical Videos. You can notice a projection on the top of the piston (marked red in fig:) this is to assist the scavenging process, as the fresh charge is pushing the hot air to exhaust, this will result some of the fresh charge to burn (loss of efficiency of the engine). To reduce the contact between the fresh charge and burned (exhaust gas) there by reducing the loss, this modification is done. As per the strokes the automotive engines are mainly classified into two types: Two stroke engines Four stroke engines. The main component of a two stroke engines are: Piston Crank Case. Connection rod. Spark Plug. Transfer Port. In Let. Out Let. Why is it called two stroke engine?: This is called two stroke engine as the power is produced in two strokes (ie: one revolution of crank shaft, 180 degree). 1st stroke: In half rotation (90 degree). 2nd stroke: Another half rotation (90 degree). This total 180 degree (2 strokes) one power is produced. Working of two stroke engine: As shown in the fig:shows that the piston is in TDC (top dear center) at this position as shown in the fig:you can notice that the In-let port is open. At this point the fresh charge enters the crank case through the In-let port and the same time the fresh charge gets compressed and combustion takes place at TDC (top dead center). So at this stroke when the piston is at TDC as mentioned below, three process are happening in a single stroke (1st stroke: 90 degree rotation of crank shaft). Suction. Compression. Combustion. When the piston is at BDS, the fresh charge already entered the crank case in the previous stroke gets pre-compressed and transfers through the transfer port as shown in fig:and pushes the exhaust get put. So in this stroke two process are involved (2nd stroke: 90 degree rotation of crank shaft). Pre-compresion. Exhaust. Thus in two strokes, ie: 90 degree*2 rotation+ 180 degree = one power stroke (one power produced).
