Also known as price manipulation or stock manipulation, it involves literally manipulating financial markets for personal gain. Market manipulation schemes use social media, telemarketing, high-speed trading, and other tactics to deliberately raise or lower stock prices. On the other hand, S&D traders manipulate stock prices in bear markets by shorting and then using smear campaigns to lower the price of the target stock.

S&D traders manipulate stock prices through smear campaigns, often online, to lower the price of the target stock. However, short sellers are using misinformation and the bear market to manipulate stocks. When the \"short and distorting\" maneuver is successful, investors who originally bought shares at higher prices sell them at lower prices due to the misconception that the value of the shares will fall substantially. This works with a company that is in very big trouble on paper, with incredibly high debt, persistently high annual losses, but very few assets, making bankruptcy inevitable.
This convinces them of the possibility of a price increase in the future, so they buy those shares, which ultimately leads to an increase in the actual price of the shares. This is the opposite of a pump-and-dump tactic where an investor buys a stock (goes long) and gives false information that causes the target price of the stock to rise. Realizing both, the promoter sells his shares (\"Junkyard\"), and the price of the shares falls, taking with him all the money of the deceived investors. Instead of providing legitimate information about the company, the promoter sends fake (“pump”) emails to millions of unsophisticated investors (sometimes called “retail investors”) in an attempt to increase the share price and number of points.
When short-term interest peaks, the company announces that it has entered into a deal with its creditors to repay its loans in exchange for shares (or some similar arrangement that uses the share price in the company\'s favor). ., knowing that those with short positions will be cramped when the stock price skyrockets. The manipulator takes a wide long (short) financial position that will benefit from a higher (lower) price benchmark calculation, then trades in the physical commodity markets in such high volume that it affects the benchmark price in management, which will benefit their financial position . Finally, short selling also offers equity investors (who are long) the opportunity to earn additional income by lending out their shares for short positions.
Shorts must control the price of the stock for long periods of time (often months to over a year) and cannot afford to accumulate an unlimited amount of short stocks, so they have to buy stocks at the same time they sell stocks. This advantage allowed them to manipulate the stock price by initiating short-term attacks.
By examining hedge fund assets and their returns, they test their claim that hedge funds manipulate stock prices at the end of the month to increase the returns of their portfolios to attract and retain investment capital. The authors first explore this concept by examining the assets of hedge fund companies as well as stock prices to determine whether the degree of manipulation is sufficient to influence stock prices.
