Share your successes at work to ensure you get the recognition & opportunities you deserve. Read my Getting Ahead book https://www.amazon.com/Getting-Ahead-Three-Steps-Career/dp/0470915870/ to learn how to begin doing this now.
How can you advocate for yourself at work? You need to share your wins and accomplishments. Here’s how to begin:
• Track your achievements.
• Practice telling your success stories.
• Speak about your successes to others.
First, you need to know what your accomplishments are. Then, you need to start telling others about them. These steps will help you to do that as effectively as possible.
Here’s how to track your achievements: Keep a log of them, whether handwritten or electronic. In the log, give yourself feedback on your performance in projects. Write down your success stories so you can leverage them later, jotting down the details that you might otherwise forget. Include challenges you overcame to bring a project to fruition, so you can convey the full effort it took to achieve the results you obtained. Once a week, review everything you did over the course of the week and put together a list of your accomplishments.
Tracking your accomplishments in this way will greatly build your morale, while giving you a portfolio of your successes that you can let others know about. They’ll be in the forefront of your mind, ready to mention in any interaction—including in your performance reviews with your boss.
Prepare to share your success stories about your work, too. Think about how you’d tell a story about how your team overcame a huge hurdle, or how you solved a problem that no one had the answer to. Make it concise and memorable, focusing on the key points. Then, practice sharing your stories with people you trust, like coworkers or loved ones.
Now it’s time to start sharing your wins with organizational leaders so they’ll understand the effort you put in. When you share project results, tell a memorable story about how you achieved them. When you encounter a leader in the hallway, be prepared with an anecdote about your team’s recent project. As you work to share your success stories, you’ll gain more recognition for your hard work, and doors will start opening.
