| Video Discription | Try this tibialis posterior exercise to help strengthen a key muscle during shin splint rehab. The tibialis posterior is one of the main inverters of the foot and ankle and is crucial for maintaining the arch of the foot. It is also a plantarflexor of the foot/ankle. When working with cases of shin splints, our first recommendation is to evaluate the person's training volume and frequency as a potential cause of their symptoms. For example, a sudden and dramatic increase in running mileage may lead to shin splints if the body is not prepared for it. Other important factors to consider during shin splint rehab are things like footwear, running surfaces, and running mechanics. Baseline strength in various muscles of the lower leg is also crucial. This drill is more of an "activation" type exercise so we recommend 2-3 sets of 25-30 reps.
