The Palace Complex:
One of the masterpieces of the medieval architecture of the ancient city is the residence of Shirvan governors – the Shirvanshahs' Palace Complex which has preserved its historic and architectural features up to date.
The Palace ensemble consists of 8 buildings: the Palace, the Divankhane (Court –House), the Dervish's Mausoleum, the Eastern (Murad) Gate, the Palace Mosque, the Keyqubad Mosque, the Shah Tomb & the Hamam (Bathhouse).
All the buildings of the complex were built with local limestone ("badamdam"). The most ruined structure of the complex is the Palace building.
1. The Palace Building:
The Palace is a two-storey building in the form of an irregular rectangle. For proper lightening of the Palace, its southern-east corner was slotted. Initially, there were 52 rooms in the Palace, 27 of them were on the 1st floor, 25 – on the 2nd floor. The rooms were symmetric. On the 2nd floor, the arched rooms for Shah and his family were located. The windows of the 2nd floor have a nice outlook over the sea.
2. Divankhana: The main building of the Shirvanshahs’ Palace adjoins Divankhana, a small fine pavilion situated inside a small yard surrounded by a gallery-arcade on three sides.
It consists of an octahedral hall covered with a stone cupola both inside and outside.
The main entrance is decorated with an ornament and inscriptions of extraordinary refinement and beauty. Besides this, there are inscriptions in the Arabic language in graphic print of Cufa.
Its construction was supposed to be stopped due to military developments of 1500-1501 which date it back to the end of the 15th century.
3. Dervish Tomb:
The tomb named by the people "Dervish Tomb" and located in the southern part of the courtyard takes the central place in the middle yard. Some experts allege that it belongs to Seyid Yahya Bakuvi. Some experts groundlessly attribute all the monuments existing in the lower courtyard, including the Dervish Tomb, to the Khanaqah buildings complex.
The tomb is notable for its fine structure.
4. The Keyqubad Mosque:
The Keyqubad Mosque was a mosque-medrese building adjoining the Dervish Tomb. The Mosque comprises a praying hall and a small corridor before it. Formerly there were four columns in the centre of the hall to support the dome. Only the remains of the foundation and several safe arches of the Keyqubad Mosque survive now from the historical mosque which was built in 14th Century.
5. The Eastern Gate Entrance:
The only structure dated back to the 16th Century is the Murad Gate. 2 medallions on the upper edge of the Murad Gate Entrance contain the following inscriptions: "This building was built in the period of the Great and Fair Sultan III Murad to order by the Grand Rejeb Bakuvi in 994 AH (1585-86 AD)".
6. Shah's Tomb:
The Shah Tomb is located in the area of the lower courtyard. The lower courtyard is separated from the other one with the circular close wall.
There is inscription on the entrance which says: "Defender of the faith, a man of the prophets, the great sultan Shirvanshah Khaliullah, let his reign and power last eternally, ordered to build this bright building for his mother and his 7-year son, Allah rest them in Paradise, the year of 839 AH" (1453 AD).
The entrance passage has rich ornaments. On the top of the entrance, 92 aya of the 12th surah of the Quran was engraved.
Members of the Shirvanshahs' family were buried here.
7. The Shah Mosque:
The Shah Mosque is located at the lower court close to the Shah Tomb. The Mosque is 22 m in height. The inscription belting the minaret says: "The erection of the minaret was ordered by the Great Sultan Khaliullah. Allah extends his reign and power years. 845 AH" (1441 -42 AD).
A well and a small pool for washing and ablution before entering the mosque are on the north of courtyard.
8. The Hamam:
The Palace Hamam is located in the lower courtyard of the Complex. Like all Hamams in the Icherisheher this Hamam was also built under ground in order to keep the regular temperature condition. The thickness of the ground layer gradually increased and has completely covered it. The Hamam was revealed in 1939 accidentally and it was conserved in 1961. According to the walls survived till our days, it can be stated that its rooms were domed.
Water to Hamam flowed from an Ovdan (storage lake) near the wall to a boiler room, then was distributed to rooms through special channels.
