Lecture 1 Western Political Thought | PSIR | Shubhra Ranjan Some of the most important thinkers in Western political thought include: Plato (428-348 BCE): Plato was a Greek philosopher who founded the Academy in Athens, one of the first institutions of higher learning in the Western world. His ideas about the ideal state and the nature of knowledge have had a profound influence on Western thought. Aristotle (384-322 BCE): Aristotle was a Greek philosopher who was a student of Plato. He was a prolific writer on a wide range of topics, including politics, ethics, and logic. His ideas about the natural world and the human condition have been influential in many fields, including political science. Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679): Hobbes was an English philosopher who is considered one of the founders of modern political thought. His book Leviathan (1651) is a classic work of political philosophy that explores the nature of the state and the relationship between the individual and the state. John Locke (1632-1704): Locke was an English philosopher who is considered one of the most important figures in the development of liberalism. His ideas about natural rights, limited government, and the separation of powers have had a profound impact on the development of Western political thought. Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778): Rousseau was a Swiss philosopher who is considered one of the most important figures of the Enlightenment. His ideas about the social contract, the general will, and the natural goodness of man have been influential in many fields, including political science, sociology, and psychology. Karl Marx (1818-1883): Marx was a German philosopher, economist, and sociologist who is considered one of the most influential thinkers of the 19th century. His ideas about class struggle, the labor theory of value, and the communist revolution have had a profound impact on the development of political thought and social movements around the world.
