The data from the World Gold Council reveals a staggering trend — central banks have acquired more gold in the past two years than in the previous fifty years combined. In 2022, global reserve banks procured 1,136 tons of gold, the highest since 1967 and the second-highest since 1950, marking a 150% surge from 2021. The World Gold Council further reports that the apex banks added another 1,037.4 metric tons to their reserves last year, the second-highest annual purchase in history. Even with the high standards set over the past couple of years, the intense gold buying spree has rolled into 2024, spurred by the latest surge in gold prices. Global official gold reserves jumped by a net 290 tons in the first quarter, setting a new record in the WGC’s data that dates back to 2000. This figure is 1% higher than the previous Q1 record of 286 tons set in 2023 and a whopping 69% above the five-year quarterly average of 171 tons.
