| Video Discription | In this video I try to explain how to install a skylight on a roof, I explain my opinion as to how a flat glass skylight on a flat roof should be installed. Skylights come in different shapes and sizes for different applications such as sloped/pitched roofs and flat roofs. The skylight framing and the skylight flashing installation are just as important as the skylight itself, all must be professionally installed in order to achieve a water tight installation. It is my opinion that installing a flat glass skylight on a flat roof should have a pitched curb built above the roof. The reason for this is so the skylight can shed water, otherwise ponding water may occur during rain. So you may ask whats the big deal with water ponding on the glass? Water ponding may accelerate wear on the skylight seals because they cannot dry if surrounded by moisture which may lead to a leaking skylight potentially damaging ceiling around skylight, the same can be said for water ponding on flat roof materials. This negative affect will not happen overnight however it needs to be taken into consideration over the long term life expectancy of the skylight and or roof materials. Skylights do come with round glass to accommodate a flat roof installation and there are many skylight manufacturers to choose from. Always contact a qualified professional when considering a skylight for your home.
