So here are my thoughts on Smart Home Trends for 2020, and a few honorable mentions that I think will come later in the decade.
1. I see Voice control being huge in 2020, and beyond. I know Voice isn't new, but companies like Josh.ai are really pushing the envelope. They're showing everyone how much farther Voice can go, but reducing the paint points we all hate about Voice.
2. Lighting Control, and more specifically low voltage lighting. Price points, and new products, we're seeing far more bids with lighting control than ever before, but additionally, we're seeing a trend with Low Voltage Lighting.
If you're familiar with Philips Hue's, or any bulb where you can control the color, and light temperature, this is the major advantage to Low Voltage lighting.
There's a lot of talk right now about the way the tech in our lives effects, our health and well being, one place we see this is with our Circadian Rhythms, or your bodies natural clock.
Light has a huge impact on our Circadian rhythm. You've likely heard that blue light emitted from electronics is bad for sleep, this is for the same reasons.
With low voltage lighting, we can change light temperature to match our bodies natural clock. In the morning, we can have a whiter light to help us wake up feeling energized. At evening we can have a warmer light t help us feel sleepy.
Then of course we have full color control when we want the disco effect. It's still price prohibitive, so most Clients are choosing a few rooms, but certainly this is a growing trend.
2. Shade Control, for the same reasons, and lowering price points, I see shades trending in 20s. People are starting to really appreciate the impact it can have on the environment of the homes and it's easier than ever before to find shade and window treatments for both wireless and wired applications.
3. Centralized Systems, we're seeing some 'Smart Home Fatigue' or Clients frustration with multiple Smart Home Devices, dozens of apps. Clients are wanting a centralized system. That doesn't mean you can't still buy multiple 3rd party devices, we just want to buy ones that all talk and play nice together.
4. Your relationship with your Smart Home Dealer, or Custom Integrator is changing. They're becoming more of a Tech Consultant, much like an interior designer, but for the tech in your home. We'll see a day, where you work with a local tech designer, and then higher someone else for the actual instal. For now, they're usually the same company, but that's changing.
5. I think media rooms are having a comeback. Large flatscreens, better audio, and even cool living room furniture that can transform into Media Chairs. It doesn't have to be a dedicated room, but we're seeing much larger budgets being dedicated to media rooms.
Here are my honorable mentions - Health and wellness rooms. I think this is more one for the decade. it's early, and it's a bit abstract for a lot of people. I don't think most people are looking to buy a 'wellness room' at least not yet, but we're seeing it in isolated areas like lighting and shade control, where you want the tech to improve your health and wellness. I do think Health and wellness rooms will become a thing though in this decade.
Lastly digital art. Again, this has been a little price prohibitive, and I think it's a bit abstract, but products like Samsung Frame TV have really helped clients start to look at digital art differently.
I think in 2020, you'll start seeing people put Digital Art in 'Non TV locations' so the entry way, a stair hallway, or an 'art wall' but with a digital display so they can change out the art anytime they want.
Projection mapping I hope will hit because it's just cool, but a combination of price point, and logistics I think it's still a ways out, but hopefully we'll see it in the 20's.
