Enjoy. This was a whopper. Compiled in this little showcase reel is the sum total of over three years of riffing livetweets with #GHWP, #CineMon (which I only host every other week but am in charge of creating the playlists and cultivating thematic material), and GHWP's new little Saturday night movie livetweet #SpaceApeCinema which has had a fun little crowd so far with movies and reruns of Twin Peaks alternating weeks. Horror, science fiction, Japanese superheroes, Kaiju, movies, television, comedy, animation, and even heartfelt literary drama collide for this tribute to the strange and suspenseful, set to the appropriately titled "Twilight Zone" by Golden Earring. Additionally, this video is dedicated to the memory of several people we've lost recently, and most of them are featured somewhere in this video: Margot Kidder (in The Hitchhiker episode "Night Shift"), Chuck McCann (proliferate voice actor, commercial figure, and co-star of "The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter"), C. Martin Croker (animator and voice of Zorak and Moltar on "Space Ghost: Coast to Coast" and "Cartoon Planet"), and Jim Hendricks (best known as horror host Commander USA). The passing of Emily Dole (GLOW's Mt. Fiji) and supernatural radio host Art Bell hit me particularly hard, and although they don't appear in this video, they had immense impact on my love for the audio-visual medium, a love that was a requirement for making a video like this. You could say that Art Bell does appear in this video in spirit. He used "Golden Earring" as bumper music on his radio show all the time, and Art's taste in bumper music was very much in tune with many of my favorite songs of all time. I've kicked around the idea of another reel for a year or two, but I never could surpass the love and perfection of that first GHWP anniversary reel. Of course, I loved that one so much that I made two versions. I did not think I would make another one, and it took several days for this video to click with me. Once I knew I had it, I thought that it was finished, but a last-stage editing issue nearly made me want to throw it out completely. I usually call these labors of love, but this one was almost a test of my patience. It certainly will be the last time I make a video like this with older software. It's well beyond time for some new hardware as well. One of my favorite TV moments of all time is in an episode of "Car 54, Where Are You?" in which a man goes crazy after hearing "By the Light of the Silvery Moon" too many times. At some point, even something you love can become torturous. I have to pick a song for these videos that I can stomach listening to a hundred times, and I think it came pretty close this time as I tried to make sure the rapid-fire clips in the instrumental break did not fall out of sync. The good news is that the song itself has a beat of almost exactly half a second. This was a learning experience so intense that I almost felt like it was my first time again. I don't take for granted the amount of effort an editor has to put into their work regardless of how high-tech their computer software or how big their budget. This video only runs about six minutes, but it took no less than 25 hours over the course of six days. The defining moment came when I discovered that certain video effects were creating hiccups (I said it was old software) that caused the finished file to have a fluctuating increase in tempo of .86%. You read that right. Point. Eighty-six. Percent. The real nightmare of it was the amount of time it took to calculate that percentage. When I did, I still couldn't remedy the situation to correct the instrumental break. That forced me to go back to an earlier version of the project, remove almost all of those effects, and re-edit key sections of the video all over again, replacing dozens of clips and altering their timing. Now I know why a few tiny little clips were not in perfect sync with the audio in previous videos I have made. Every video comes out with that .86% fluctuation in playback speed. That guitar riff is going to haunt me for the rest of my days. I didn't forget to include a clip from the one series that was missing from my GHWP extended reel. It wasn't a big hit, but it bugged me for two years that the complete extended reel was not truly complete. It's an Easter egg that's going to make me smile every time I see it, at least. If I don't come back and kick myself later for shoddy memory , not a single television series is missing this time. Whew. |
