| Video Discription | Welcome to Rome Italy and the famous SPANISH STEPS. This video will provide history, facts and a walkthrough the Spanish Steps. The Spanish Steps (Italian: Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti) are a set of steps in Rome, Italy, climbing a steep slope between the Piazza di Spagna at the base and Piazza Trinità dei Monti, dominated by the Trinità dei Monti church at the top. The monumental stairway of 135 steps (the slightly elevated drainage system is often mistaken for the first step) was built with French diplomat Étienne Gueffier's bequeathed funds of 20,000 scudi, in 1723–1725, linking the Trinità dei Monti church that was under the patronage of the Bourbon kings of France and the Bourbon Spanish Embassy at the top of the steps to the Holy See in the Palazzo Monaldeschi at the bottom of the steps. The stairway was designed by architects Francesco de Sanctis and Alessandro Specchi. The Spanish Steps is not only one of Rome's most popular gathering places, but the steps are also one of the longest and widest staircases in all of Europe. To get to the Spanish Steps the closest Metro stop is SPAGNA station. Before it was no more eating or drinking, now it's also no more sitting on the famous Spanish Steps in Rome. Implementing an ordinance that came into effect in July 2019, police patrols started telling tourists about the sitting ban on one of the most iconic locations in Rome. Tourists enjoying a short rest on the world famous steps were told on to stand up, or they would be fined up to 400 euros, since in the eternal City it is forbidden to sit on monuments. It is now forbidden to sit, eat or drink on the Spanish Steps, considered a monument and listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The ordinance also applies to other protected places like the Trevi Fountain. The city says it will been enforcing all parts of the ordinance at the Spanish Steps.
