Preview: Sunrisers Hyderabad will try to move on from their disastrous performance in Qualifier 1 when they face Rajasthan Royals at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Hyderabad failed to qualify for the final on their first attempt and were defeated by the Kolkata Knight Riders, who earlier qualified for the IPL 2024 final.
Meanwhile, Rajasthan ended their terrible run in the late rounds of the IPL by breaking Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) six-match unbeaten streak. Hyderabad has a minor advantage over Rajasthan, with 10 wins in 19 matches compared to 9 for the latter.
The Travishek bullet train has been halted in recent matches, owing primarily to Travis Head's back-to-back ducks. The moving white ball from left-arm pacers has rattled Head's off stump twice in a row. Mitchell Starc delivered a first-over special and Arshdeep too done this with a beauty. Head got his lines completely wrong on both occasions. Trent Boult, a powerplay expert, will be poised to capitalize on this opportunity. The SRH openers have been a revelation when they have clicked in the powerplay, with a season strike rate of 11.48 runs per over in the first six overs. Boult, on the other hand, has an economy rate of 6.71 in the opening six overs and nine wickets this season.
Henrich Klaasen struck a handful of jaw-dropping sixes in SRH's triumph over PBKS, demonstrating why he is so good against spin. Rahul Chahar dropped it a little short, and Klaasen blasted it over midwicket. Harpreet Brar was fuller than that, but Klaasen picked up the length early on to pull it straighter for a tremendous six. This IPL season, the South African batter has struck at 193.68 against spin, which is where RR's spinners must step in.
The SRH pacers have always managed to bowl one tight over each at the close of the innings, even on days when they have given up a lot of runs. Recall the thrilling match versus MI, wherein Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Cummins decelerated, so minimizing the impact of Mumbai's relentless attack. In a 200-versus-200 encounter, Bhuvi, Cummins, and T Natarajan contributed 6, 6, and 9 runs in overs 17–19 against PBKS. Samson's team will be hoping that Shimron Hetmyer's return gives RR the advantage here. While Riyan Parag and Rovman Powell will also be important, Hetmyer is the game-winner at this point. RR is expecting a spectacular performance from their healthy left-hander.
R Ashwin, despite a slow start to the IPL, has found his rhythm and understands the Chennai pitch more than any of the cricketers who will play on Friday. Ashwin's four overs might be dust of gold for RR, keeping SRH's big hitters subdued.
When Sanju Samson was stumped out by Karn Sharma in the Eliminator and it was the very first time Sanju was taken by a spinner in IPL 2024. He has a higher strike rate against pace this season (164.42 vs 140.94), but Samson's ability to use spin in the middle overs is key. In Chennai, however, he must target whichever spinners SRH selects, as it is the most evident weakness in Cummins' bowling unit. SRH spinners have taken just 13 wickets this season, with an economy rate of 11.20. Whether they return to Mayank Markande or remain with Vijayakanth Viyaskanth, Samson must soon put the Ahmedabad dismissal behind him.
