| Video Discription | Stamp duty reserve tax is a tax introduced by the Finance Act 1986. It is not technically stamp duty but a separate tax imposing a charge of 0.5% when you buy shares. It's worth bearing in mind that Stamp duty reserve tax & Stamp Duty are two different things - Stamp duty reserve tax covers electronic trades and the tax will always be collected automatically by your broker. There is Stamp Duty on non-electronic UK share transactions with the same rate of 0.5% but a minimum threshold. the tax is applied to transactions over £1000. This tax is applied when buying shares in a uk company or in a foreign company with a share register in the uk. When selling the shares this tax is not applied! Stamp duty reserve tax would not apply in the majority of overseas cases. However, many other countries have similar taxes such as Irish Stamp ( at a rate of 1%) and French & Italian Transaction tax which is 0.2%. Even if you have investment ISA like i do which helps you evade certain taxes like capital gain tax, sadly stamp duty is the one and only tax you can't evade and must pay. As annoying as it is to pay tax Stamp duty tax on stock is very cheap at 0.5% unless you buy millions of pounds worth of stock it will not affect you too much.
