January 6, 1980, the day the Houston Oilers faced and ultimately lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC championship game--for the second consecutive year--is one of the most significant in Oilers’ history. This video I put together looks at the two events that make it so: The first is the nullification of Mike Benfro’s TD catch from Dan Pastorini late in the 3rd quarter, which would have tied the score at 17. I’m not arguing that the Oilers would have won the game had the call gone as it should, but this video--pulled from a number of sources---should put to rest any doubts that this was indeed a blown call. The NBC commentary from one the best NFL broadcasting teams ever to call football games—Dick Enberg and Merlin Olsen—is both revealing and fascinating. Even the commentator on Steelers radio thought it was a touchdown! More than any other single controversial call, the Renfro non-TD led to the NFL’s eventual adoption of instant replay in the mid-1980s. The second historical event is the massive homecoming/pep rally—also for the second consecutive year--the Oilers received upon their return to Houston that night. Seventy thousand people crammed into the Astrodome and 100,000 more lined the team’s route from the airport. It's easy to support a winner, but the massive display of support by Houston fans for a team that had lost a conference championship game (not even the Super Bowl!) remains unparalleled in professional sports and defines the spirit of what "Luv Ya Blue" was all about. These historic rallies attended by tens of thousands serve as Exhibit A as to why the city of Houston should have its Oilers history back, as they are.more than just sports history—they are indispensable highlights of Houston’s civic past. I probably should add a third significant event to come from that fateful January day inPittsburgh—Vernon Perry’s interception return for a TD early in the first quarter of the game was as close as the franchise got to the Super Bowl during its Houston days.
