Stevie Wonder wanted to write a song acknowledging musicians who he felt was important and had influenced him – he wanted to show his appreciation. The text not only mentions Duke Ellington, but also other influential jazz musicians and composers such as Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Louis Armstrong & Ella Fitzgerald. It was first released on the Stevie Wonder album “Songs In The Key Of Life” in 1976 and then released as a single in 1977 topping American and British Billboards. ABOUT THE SHEET IN THE VIDEO This is an arrangement of the song – not an exact transcription. The arrangement follows the same composition as the original song, but it differs in some other areas. Generally, the level of detail is not very high. The horns are transcribed pretty accurately even though the instrumentation is a bit different (the original horn section is two trumpets, alto sax and tenor sax). In the bass guitar and guitar parts all variations are omitted, so that only the most basic and consistent rhythm/note pattern is transcribed. The keyboard part is very minimalistic and contains almost only the chords. Note that drums have been omitted completely from the score. The parts are notated in respectively treble and bass cleff. The alto saxophone part is written in treble clef in Eb and the tenor sax and trumpet part are written in treble clef in Bb. The rest of the parts are written in C.
