Stocks have been laser-focused on interest rate cuts for the next leg higher. The Fed’s fastest rate hike in 40 years starting March 2021 drove stocks crashing 21% by October, just seven months later. Stopping the rate hikes in July of last year and the market is up 26% since then. Now investors are hoping the Fed comes to the rescue, lowering rates and reversing the damage it’s done to the economy. A cut in its Fed Funds rate would flow through to mortgages, consumer and business borrowing costs and help recharge the economy and stocks. The central bank held rates at the highest in decades when it met this month and investors aren’t expecting a cut in July either. But the Fed could be about to use its stealthiest tool to lower interest rates and just before the economy. It will mean big moves in stocks, especially those in three groups.
