Swetha Mohan was born on 19 November 1985 in a Malayalam family in Chennai. She is the daughter of Krishna Mohan and playback singer Sujatha Mohan. She completed her schooling from Good Shepherd Convent, Chennai and graduated from Stella Maris College, Chennai. Shweta started her training in Carnatic music at the age of 9. As a child artist, A. R. Rahman recorded the music direction for the choruses of 'Kuchi Kuchi Rakamma' (Bombay) and '(Indira) Achaam Achaam Illai'. Swetha Mohan married her longtime boyfriend Ashwin in 2011 and the couple had a daughter named Srastha in 2017.
