Essentially I had no income, so I lost the apartment I was living in. ++WHITE FLASH++ I lived in the shelters that were available and I was lucky enough into one of the transitional centers. ++WHITE FLASH++ Back then, you know, homelessness wasn't, it was big, but it's not as prevalent as it is now. Now, there are way too many people on the streets, and there's going to be more because of this case and because of more housing being lost, affordable, deeply affordable housing being lost." Various of encampment STORYLINE: Two formerly homeless Seattle women said a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court allowing cities to enforce bans on camping on streets and in parks left them heartbroken and could lead to more people outside. Anitra Freeman spent time outside due to mental health reasons. Gina Owens was left disabled after a car accident. Now both have been housed for years and volunteer for homeless advocacy organizations. "I'm still heartbroken," Freeman said. "Instead of pushing on the federal government to let them sweep more. (Cities) should be pushing on the federal government to fund housing, to change, housing policies to change having universal health care, to do all the things that will lower homelessness nationwide." Owens, who was homeless in the early 2000's, noted that homelessness has grown in cities like Seattle and handing down fines will aggravate homeless people's problems. "Back then, you know, homelessness wasn't, it was big, but it's not as prevalent as it is now. Now, there are way too many people on the streets, and there's going to be more because of this case," she said. But Seattle City Attorney Ann Davison, who wrote an amicus brief in support of Grants Pass, welcomed the decision.
