| Video Discription | Understanding physiological processes in bacterial cells using cryo-EM Speaker: Tanmay Bharat, Laboratory of Molecular Biology, MRC, UK Chair: Geoff Holdgate, AstraZeneca, UK Co-Chair: Chris Johnson, MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, UK Tanmay Bharat describes his work elucidating the structure of S-layer proteins that envelope many prokaryotic cells. He shows through a combination of cryo-EM and cryo-ET, X-ray crystallography and MD simulations the S-layer is made of units of self-oligomerizing proteins that form a large array on the surface. His work shows how this layer is connected the underlying structure of the cells and also points towards the mechanism of their assembly and transport to the outer layer in the dividing prokaryotic cell.
