| Video Discription | What is the relation between the tails of an income distribution and cultural diversity? How social media and the press influence the formation of perceptions in the era of post-truth? What is the link between a classification algorithm and the formation of stereotypes? How does the context we live in influence our perception of the different? Are citizens of the world on the wrong side of history and what is their Ithaca? Prof Nikos Tzavidis speaks not as an academic but from the point of view of a migrant. Nikos Tzavidis is Professor of Statistical Methodology and currently Head of Department of Social Statistics and Demography and Deputy Director of the Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute at the University of Southampton. He has held academic positions at the Universities of London (Centre for Longitudinal Studies) and Manchester (Centre for Census and Survey Research) and has worked at the statistical office of the European Union. His research is funded by the European Framework programmes, the Economic and Social Research Council in the UK and the British Academy. He is fellow of the Royal Statistical Society, elected member of the International Statistical Institute, council member of the International Association of Survey Statisticians and associate editor of Int/nal Statistical Review and the Journal of Official Statistics. He is extensively involved in consultancy work for National Statistical Institutes and Government Departments in the UK, Europe and overseas.
