| Video Discription | 33 LCA Tejas MK1A to get Uttam AESA Radar Recently, we have talked about the Super Sukhoi upgrade with most important component of the upgrade being Uttam AESA FCR. As per reports, the TOT for Uttam AESA radar has been given to HAL by DRDO. Uttam AESA radars will also be integrated with the Tejas MK1A fighter jet which has already taken its first flight on 20th May, 2022 and is slated to begin delivery by 2024. While the TOT for Uttam FCR has been given to HAL, the PSU will take another 1 year to further fine tune the FCR for LCA Tejas. It has also been reported that the Tejas Mk1A will feature Uttam AESA radar only from 41st unit onward. Earlier it was reported to be 21st unit onward. Which means that the out of order of 73 Tejas MK1A fighter only 33 of them get Uttam AESA radar. However, this is not a matter of concern as we have to remember the fact that this is the 1st time that India has developed its own AESA FCR and now integrating it. 40 Tejas MK1A to get Israel’s EL/M-2052 AESA The remaining 40 Tejas MK1A will have Israel’s EL/M-2052 AESA FCR. The EL/M-2052 AESA radar has also been equipped onboard the Jaguar DARIN III fighter jets of the air force. Learning from the DARIN III upgrade experience, it will be much easier for HAL to integrate the EL/M 2052 radars on LCA Tejas. The Israel’s FCR has been selected for the LCA program ahead of the derivate of French Thales RBE2 radar which powers Rafale fighter jets. The EL/M-2052 AESA radar will act as a stop-gap measure, till HAL calibrate and fine tune the Uttam AESA radar as per LCA Tejas need. Uttam AESA Radar Uttam AESA FCR is a full solid-state gallium arsenide (GaAs) based active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar. It is a liquid cooled AESA radar in which increasing or decreasing the number of TR modules is quite easy depending on fighter jet’s nose cone. It has a total of 18 modes in Air to Air, Air to Ground and Air to Sea roles. Uttam has 95% indigenous component with only one imported subsystem. Uttam Radar to feature in Tejas MK1A will have close to 780 TR modules whereas Tejas MK2 will feature 992 & SU-30 MKI 1280 T/R Modules. EL/M-2052 vs Uttam AESA radar If we compare the capabilities of the EL/M-2052 with Uttam AESA radar the results are interesting. The Israel’s FCR has a range of 90KM for object of RCS 1msq object whereas Uttam FCR has a range of 150km for object of RCS 2msq. We have also seen Uttam locking LCA Tejas from a range of 140KM range which is quite significant because LCA Tejas has RCS of just 0.5msq. Uttam can track upto 100 targets whereas EL/M-2052 can track upto 64 targets. While the Uttam has maximum range of 190+ km, the EL/M-2052 has a range of 200km. From the comparison we can clearly understand that Uttam is better than EL/M-2052 in may aspects. Air-to-Air mode is where Uttam has exceeded expectations.
