5 Reason Why Deacon is Main Killer In The Little Things
https://youtu.be/S3-BVKThPYA
What Happened At The End?
Sparma and Baxter go to the desert when Sparma promises him to lead him to the body of Rhonda Rathbun. Sparma taunts Baxter by making remarks such as, how is he going to protect his own daughters if he cannot protect dead girls? Baxter is angered and hits Sharma with a shovel and this kills him. Deacon finds Baxter and Sparma's dead body and then flashes to five years ago when he is searching for the body of a missing girl. When he sees someone running towards him, he pulls the trigger without looking. Then he finds out that the person approaching him was the missing girl he was trying to find.
When Deacon reveals that he has also made a mistake once, he directs Baxter to dig a hole for Sparma's body and clear up the evidence. Later, Deacon comforts Baxter by asking him to forget about it and if he does anything related to him, Sparma will come to haunt him. Deacon says, "It's the little things that get you caught."
We also see Baxter in his home when he receives a package from Deacon, which contains a red barrette. Rathbun's parents had told Baxter that he always wore a red barrette while running, so the killer will probably have it.
Does this mean Deacon is the killer? Let's find out.
The clues are pointing towards Deacon being the killer. In another flashback, we have seen Farris and Coroner Dunigan helping cover up Deacon's crime. Dunigan reports the woman's death as a result of a stab instead of a gunshot. We also see Deacon in the present time while he is burning Sparma's belongings and then a close-up of a package of barrettes is shown and the red one is missing.
Is Sparma Guilty?
Deacon tries to comfort Baxter by giving him the red barrette to prove that Sparma was indeed Rathbun's killer. However, as viewers, we can see that Deacon bought the barrette and he did not find it at Sparma's house. This makes us confused as now we are not sure if Sparma was actually the killer of Rathbun or not? Was Sparma guilty or is there another killer out there? Sparma had also told Baxter that he had never killed anyone so he might just be messing with the detectives and the killer remains free. The only reason Sparma is a suspect is because Deacon convinces himself and Baxter that he did it.
Is Baxter In Trouble?
As we know, the FBI has taken over the case, Baxter might have to pay for murdering not one but two people. He has the red barrette, which was given to him by Deacon. The red barrette can prove that Baxter is the killer. This way Baxter might be framed for Rathbun's killer.
Who Is The Killer?
The Little Things had an ambiguous ending and it left viewers trying to make sense of it, collect clues and decide who they think the killer is. The writer, John Lee Hancook, wrote The Little Things in 1993 and shared how his idea came to be. He said, "I just remember really liking crime dramas and psychological thrillers, but also feeling that especially some of the ones in the '80s had become a little paint-by-numbers. I would like all the clues and the misdirects and the complications, and then you'd get to the third act where the bad guy is identified and the good guys give chase. And usually, there's some kind of action set piece, and then there's a face-off and the good guy heroically defeats the bad guy."
He further explained, "And I thought, 'Why does the third act have to be less interesting than the first two?' So I wanted to see if I could have something that unravels in a way that is non-formulaic but also satisfying."
