He was an Italian Catholic friar and preacher who founded the men's Order of Friars Minor, the women’s Order of Saint Clare, the Third Order of Saint Francis, and the Custody of the Holy Land. St. Francis is widely remembered for his love for animals and nature, making him the patron saint of animals and the environment. Early Life: Born in Assisi, Umbria, to Pietro and Pica de Bernardone, Francis enjoyed a wealthy and carefree youth. He aspired to become a knight, but a series of events, including a stint as a prisoner of war and a serious illness, led to profound spiritual awakenings. Renunciation of Wealth: Following a spiritual experience, Francis felt a calling to renounce his worldly life. He famously stripped off his clothes in front of his father and the bishop of Assisi, giving up his inheritance and choosing to live in poverty. Foundation of the Franciscan Order: Initially, Francis lived as a hermit, but he soon attracted followers who were inspired by his teachings of simplicity, love, and humility. In 1209, he founded the Order of Friars Minor (commonly known as the Franciscans). Emphasis on Poverty: The Franciscans are known for their vow of poverty, emulating Christ's own life. Francis believed that worldly goods created distractions from the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment. Love for All Creatures: Francis believed in the universal brotherhood of all creatures. He is famously known for his sermon to the birds and his taming of the wolf of Gubbio. Stigmata: In 1224, during a retreat on the Mount La Verna, it's believed that Francis received the stigmata (the wounds of Christ) on his hands, feet, and side. He is the first recorded person in Christian history to bear the stigmata. Death and Canonization: Francis died on October 3, 1226, at the age of 44. He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1228, just two years after his death. Legacy: The influence of St. Francis can be seen in art, literature, and spirituality. The Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi, a UNESCO World Heritage site, holds his remains and serves as a pilgrimage site for millions.
