(10 Mar 2009) HEADLINE: Dalai Lama marks anniversary of Tibet uprising
CAPTION: Authorities in Tibet and restive parts of western China were on heightened alert Tuesday for possible unrest on the 50th anniversary of a failed uprising against Chinese rule as the Dalai Lama said Tibet had become "hell on earth" under Beijing's control. (March 10)

NATS: Ceremony
Fifty years after being forced to flee his homeland, the Dalai Lama says Tibet has become "hell on earth" under Chinese rule.
The Tibetan spiritual leader is marking the anniversary of Tibet's failed uprising against the Chinese. Speaking from his home in India, the Dalai Lama denounced Beijing's brutal crackdown in Tibet a year ago when anti-Chinese protests broke out as Bhuddist monks marked the uprising anniversary.
Security is tight in Tibet, as Chinese authorities hope to avoid a repeat of last year's violence. Checkpoints have been set up across the land and police patrols have been increased around Bhuddist monastaries.
Chinese leaders are downplaying the Dalai Lama's claims. China's president says Tibet is basically stable and Tibet's governor notes the region's population has grown by more than a million people since the 1959 uprising.

"Having occupied Tibet, the Chinese Communist government carried out a series of repressive and violent campaigns that have included 'democratic reform', class struggle, communes, the Cultural Revolution, the imposition of martial law, and more recently the patriotic re-education and the strike hard campaigns. These thrust Tibetans into such depths of suffering and hardship that they literally experienced hell on earth.
