May 2019—one of the most prolific months for tornado activity in recent memory—saw 400 tornadoes touch down across the United States between May 17 and May 30. Day after day, severe weather was a likely possibility, with many remembering the events of May 20 where numerous violent tornadoes were expected. Thankfully that didn’t happen. I’m not going over the entire outbreak sequence mainly because I’m not insane enough to do so. But out of all of those days, one stood out. May 27.
On May 27, a total of 59 tornadoes touched down across the United States, with most of the activity expected in Northern Illinois. This did not verify, in fact, the majority of the activity occurred to the east. Supercell thunderstorms in Indiana and Ohio produced multiple intense tornadoes, with 19 in NWS Wilmington’s forecast area alone. The strongest of these was an EF4 tornado with winds of 170mph that roared through the Dayton Metro, an area not initially expecting significant tornadoes. This year marks 5 years since the 2019 Memorial Day Outbreak, so today I’ll be covering the synopsis, the environment ahead of the tornadoes, the tornadoes themselves, the aftermath, and how the areas are doing today. Welcome to Nature’s Fury.
