Today, we're continuing the series on calories and we’ll be talking about TDEE, I have referenced this in previous videos but it stands for Total Daily Energy Expenditure. But don't worry, we'll make it fun and easy to understand, because nobody likes a lecture on science, right? So, what is TDEE, you ask? Well, it's the total amount of energy (or calories) your body burns every day. What is my Total Now, the TDEE is made up of four components. The first one is BMR, which stands for Basal Metabolic Rate. It's the energy your body needs just to survive, like breathing, circulating blood, and keeping your organs functioning. You know, the boring stuff that you don't even notice is happening until something goes wrong. BMR Makes up roughly 60 - 70 % of TDEE The second component of TDEE is NEAT, or Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. This is the energy you burn doing everyday tasks, like walking, fidgeting, laughing, and even talking. Yes, talking burns calories too, so keep chatting with your friends and family, and don't let anyone tell you to shut up because you’re getting your NEAT Up. NEAT makes up as much as 15% of TDEE The third component of TDEE is EAT, or Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. This is the energy you burn during physical exercise activity, like running, lifting weights, or being chased by Cocain Bear. I wonder how long that movie is going to be relevant. Anyway EAT is like the conscious effort to burn more calories, but it's not the only way to do it. In fact, some people overestimate the calories they burn during exercise, and then overcompensate by eating more than they need. Don't fall into that trap, my friends. EAT makes up as much as 0 - 15% of TDEE The fourth and final component of TDEE is TEF, or Thermic Effect of Food. This is the energy you burn digesting and processing the food you eat. Yes, you heard that right, food burns calories too! Especially protein, which takes more energy to digest than carbs or fat. So, if you want to boost your TEF, eat more protein, but don't forget about the other nutrients that your body needs to function properly. TEF usually makes up as much as 10% of TDEE Now, you may wonder, why should I care about TDEE? Well, if you're trying to lose weight, you need to create a calorie deficit, which means burning more calories than you consume. And in order to do that, you need to know your TDEE, because it tells you how many calories your body needs to maintain your current weight. If you eat less than your TDEE, you'll lose weight, but if you eat more than your TDEE, you'll gain weight. It sounds like simple math, but not always easy to execute, especially if you're used to just eating whatever.. So, how do you calculate your TDEE? Well, there are many online calculators that can give you an estimate based on your age, gender, height, weight, and activity level. But keep in mind that these calculators are not 100% accurate, because every body is different, and there are many factors that can affect your TDEE, such as genetics, hormones, stress, and sleep. So, don't rely solely on the calculator, So, to sum up: Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is the amount of energy your body requires to function each day. It's made up of your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT), Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (EAT), and the Thermic Effect of Food (TEF). But don't get too obsessed with calorie counting! Remember, food is not just about numbers. It's about nourishing your body, enjoying your meals, and finding a sustainable and healthy way of eating. And most importantly, don't let the diet industry sell you on quick fixes and magic solutions. Real, lasting weight loss takes time and patience, or at least thats what I’ve been telling myself for the past 9 weeks with over 27 pounds lost.
