By design, this type of computer is not ideal for 4K video editing as it is simply less powerful than desktop computers. Especially 13inch MacBook without a dedicated graphics card can make video editing pretty hard, even if the newer models are quite powerful as well. However, I cut all my travel videos on my 13inch MacBook Pro (today the 2018 model, before 2016) as it is the smallest laptop that is still suitable to edit videos on. So to make 4K video editing on the MacBook Pro 13inch as smooth as possible I have to use a specific workflow. Only then the maximum performance is guaranteed. At first, you should use Final Cut Pro X as it is the fastest professional video editing app on a Mac. After that, it's important to stick to the following workflow to get the maximum performance in every step of your edit: 1. Base cut and transitions 2. Sound Design 3. Color Grading By sticking to this video editing workflow your computer has to work a lot less as in the beginning, no color grading is applied. That makes cutting and creating transitions fast to render. In the second step the MacBook still has it very easy as no color correction is applied. That makes it still easy to add sound to your video. With sound design I mean adding sound effects and ambient sound, for example from the Final Cut Pro X sound library. After the cutting and sound design is done, you can finally do your color correction and grading. I recommend using the native Final Cut color grading tools as they are usually pretty quick to work with. But plugins like FilmConvert and Color Finale also work quite good. By sticking to that video editing workflow on the MacBook Pro, you should get the best performance and the least amount of lag. Of course, you can also combine that workflow with other tricks, like proxy files and you should always have your preview settings set to "better performance" for best results.
