If possible find a way to leave the plants in situ over winter so that the roots are undisturbed. Cut back all foliage in autumn before the first frost and shred then leave on soil surface. Top dress whole border before winter with 6 inches of horse manure, it doesn't need to be well rotted in my opinion. Cover manure in weed control membrane to encourage run off of water during cold season.
