And let’s jump in!
The Republic of Turkey's Altay is a third-generation+ main battle tank (MBT). The Milli Tank Üretim Projesi ALTAY (MITÜP ALTAY) program was used to build it.
The Altay is the Turkish Land Forces Command's first national MBT (TLFC).
In 2005, the Turkish National Main Battle Tank Project was launched. Altay's conceptual design phase was finished in September 2010. By 2015, the first prototype had been completed.
Otokar submitted their final offer for serial manufacture of the Altay main battle tanks to the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM) in August 2016.
Turkey plans to build 250 MITÜP Altay MBTs initially, followed by 1,000 additional tanks in four distinct lots of 250. Altay is a tank with the most cutting-edge characteristics. The driver, gunner, loader, and commander make up the Turkish MBT crew of four.
The SSM began the National Tank project in order to develop Turkish defense technical capabilities and increase local contributions to national defense.
"In August 2010, a 3D image of Altay was released to the public."
The tank is named after Army General Fahrettin Altay, who led the Turkish War of Independence's V Cavalry Corps. The Altay tank's development will be finished in three stages.
In March 2007, the Defence Industrial Executive Committee (SSIK), Turkey's defense industrial procurement decision-making authority, picked Otokar following a competitive process.
The $500 million contract covers Altay's design, development, and integration, as well as the tank's qualification through prototyping and testing.
The Altay project was started in August 2008 at the Otokar facility and finished in 2016. For testing, Otokar created four prototypes. Altay makes use of technologies developed by Hyundai Rotem for the K2 MBT in South Korea. By early 2017, the prototypes have been successfully tested. The concept and IP rights belong to Turkey.
In August 2010, a 3D depiction of Altay was released to the public.
The layout of the tank is standard. The power pack is in the back, with the driver's seat in front and a fighting chamber in the middle. The commander is seated on the right side of the turret, while the loader is seated on the left. The gunner is seated on the very same side as the commander, but slightly further forward and lower.
Altay has the K2 Black Panther MBT's sturdier chassis, as well as a redesigned Turkish turret and more armor than the K2. It also has a longer hull and seven tracked wheels.
The tank is equipped with a Volkan-III modular fire-control system (also known as the National Cannon Fire Control System for Naval Platforms (TAKS)) (FCS). Aselsan created the command, control, and information systems in collaboration with STM, SSM's software subsidiary.
"At the Otokar factory, work on the Altay project began in August 2008."
Altay is armed with a smoothbore 120mm L/55 cannon. A muzzle reference system, a thermal sleeve, and a fume extractor are all included. With blow-out panels on the roof, the ammo is housed in the turret bustle. A 7.62mm machine gun is positioned coaxially to the right of the main weaponry on the tank. For commander operation, a 12.7mm heavy machine gun is installed to the right of the turret.
The tank's front side is protected by modular reactive composite armor. Chemical, biological, and radiological (CBR) assaults are not a problem for the tank.
